Maize Restaurant is a BYOB located in what was once a barber shop for years and has a rich history that bridges a century-old historic building with a pioneering farm-to-table dining experience.

Chef Matthew McPhelin, a Philadelphia native and honors graduate of The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, opened Maize in late 2008/early 2009.  At the end of our meal, our waiter, Karl, brought Chef McPhelin to our table to explain why the restaurant is called Maize.  Maize means, that which sustains us." To honor his part-Native American ancestry and traditional hospitality, every meal historically begins with a complimentary bowl of seasoned popcorn and fresh corn biscuits.

The chef travels to local farms every day to see what is fresh and to decide what to make for that evening’s dinner.  Everything is served local and fresh.  And, you can watch it all being made through the window to the kitchen.

It is not a large restaurant.  There are less than 10 tables. Not all tables were full so it did not feel small and was nice an intimate.

The menu is the same for everyone and changes every day.  As stated, we were first served a little bowl of popcorn seasoned with oil, salt,  pepper and chives and a corn biscuit.  Very tasty starters.

After the token Maize servings we were served 4 courses.  It began with the Amuse Bouche the bite-sized appetizer served at the start of a meal to showcase the chef’s style.  And ended with 3 little sweet sampings after dessert, with a palate cleanser before dessert. See below for the full menu.

Our waiter, Karl, was friendly and "smiley." Unfortunately, he is on his way to being a pilot and won’t be around much longer.  But promised his replacement would be just as good.

The whole experience was about 3 hours, so if you decide to try it, be sure to plan enough time

It was a bit pricey, but worth the experience.
